Artificial Intelligence Gaming Evolution

Since the 1970’s when video gaming prove a hit prospect with the consumers, it has evolved from the old school simple games of Pac Man to the hugely complex advanced games which mainstream artificial intelligence (AI) in all games are currently employing.

The use of AI with the advances of 3D rendering hardware has richly made games of these days more entertaining. What used to be simple random coding in the game to ensure varying decision making made by the game, now AI has made games more unpredictable for user and the players need to be more strategic in their decision making when playing.

The very first use of AI was evident in strategy games. Game developer Sid Meier was the pioneer with his game release of Civilization back in 1991. The varying tactical and strategic decision need to be made in Civilization by the player and also the sophiscated AI was so hugely popular that it spawned a whole bunch of game copycats, sequels and clones.

Now artificial intelligence has moved to real time strategy (RTS) games. Warcraft II was released in 1995 with an AI specifically designed for RTS gaming. Game developer has made it possible for AI to perform better and faster under real time gaming and not lag when the need to perform pathfinding queries.

Another RTS AI that stood out well by gaming observer was the Half-Life first person shooter (FPS) game released in 1998. The AI opponent was excellent tactically in matching the gamer and the scalability of the AI was impressive.

Artificial Intelligence has evolved through the years with huge advances on average every six months. From modeling sensory capabilities to humanlike interaction, these randomized AI behavior parameters ensure that the game you’re playing are different at each attempt.
